Herman Hesse’s book “Trees“. He was a gardener, painter as well as writer. He loved trees — He wrote a book called “trees” with his own paintings of trees.
“Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth.
– Herman Hesse
They do not preach learning and precepts, they preach, undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life.”

This is a rare portrait of Hesse, depicting himself who enjoyed gardening all his life.

“Hesse’s paintings mostly depict the tranquil countryside of Switzerland overlooking Lake Lugano and the natural landscape of the suburbs of Montagnola. There are no living people or animals in Hesse’s paintings. Rather than not knowing how to draw such a subject, it was probably because he was tired of humans and inflamed by the human world and could not accept humans on the screen. He always painted trees standing silently and affectionately, floating clouds, and blue-shimmering lakes.”

Followings are a few of tree paintings by Herman Hesse that I found over Internet. You can find numerous his tree paintings online. What is your favorite among his trees paintings? It is very hard for me to pick just one.

Did you know “to return to a balanced state of mind” in Welsh literally means “to return to my trees”?
We call a balanced state of mind “peace”. So when we return to our own trees, we get our peaceful minds. 🙏
